Why You Should Lock Your Computer When Away

Leaving your computer unlocked, even for a short time, creates an opportunity for unauthorized access. Locking your device is one of the simplest and most effective security habits you can develop.

Risks of Leaving Your Computer Unlocked

  • Unauthorized Access: Anyone passing by can view or copy sensitive information.

  • Accidental Changes: Co-workers or visitors could accidentally alter or delete important files.

  • Security Breach: Hackers or malicious actors could exploit the access to install malware or steal data.

Best Practices

  • Always lock your computer when stepping away, even for just a minute.

  • Use a strong password, PIN, or biometric login (fingerprint/face recognition) to unlock.

  • Enable automatic screen lock after a short period of inactivity (3–10 minutes recommended).

How to Lock Quickly

  • Windows: Press Windows Key + L.

  • Mac: Press Control + Command + Q.

Remember

It only takes a second to lock your device, but it could prevent major security issues.
